The Art of Layering

Ideate. Create. Experience.

Introduction to layering scents

Layering scents may appear as a bit daunting especially if you are new to collecting fragrances. But layering scents is a good way to experiment to find your own tailored scent to express yourself.

Where to begin

It is good to begin layering scents by deciding on a factor of experimenting with complementary notes or contrasting notes.

Complementary scents – Pairing and layering scents with overlapping notes or fragrance families can create a harmonious outcome e.g. fresh scent – bergamot, white florals… (Lord, 2024)

Contrasting scents – There is more of a learning curve into understand how to layer contrasting scents but by combining notes from different fragrance families you can create and customise a unique scent e.g. combining fruity pink berry notes with pink pepper and musky notes for a fruity & sensual scent… (Microsoft Copilot, 2025)

Tips & Tricks

  1. Feel free to experiment! Experimenting is key to build your layering skills, even if the outcome does not come out the way you intended, try again!
  2. Know your pulse points! By knowing your pulse points, the scent can smell stronger – don’t forget that even if the scent may smell light to you, there’s a likely chance your nose is immune to it so ask others for their opinion!
  3. Layer heavier scents first
  4. Layer different mediums for longer lasting scent
  5. Consider applying body lotion, body balm, creams or even petroleum jelly on your pulse points before spraying any fragrances as this could help make the scent stronger as well as improving the longevity of the scent – especially if the cream is from the same fragrance line.

The main pulse points are:

  • Wrists
  • Neck
  • Behind the ears

(Not a pulse point but good to consider – spraying on shoulders and collarbone).
